Vacation

Just a note to let you know I'm going to be on vacation until the 10th of Feb. Going somewhere warmer then here. Today's high was5 degrees and a 30 mile an hour wind brrrrr. Spending some time in Utah, Las Vegas and Arizona. Hopefully Have a break from winter.

Didn't reach my January Quilting Goal of finishing 8 quilt tops that have been in progress for more then a year. I did get 4 done. I have 4 left and I did make a lot of progress on these. One just needs a border sewn on. A basket quilt that I'm still trying to decide on the layout. To add sashing or not I can't decide. I'm going to think on it while I'm on vacation. The pine burr quilt just has a lot of piecing to do I didn't realise it still had so much piecing left. And the last one the poinsettia quilt I just didn't get to it has inset corners and applique. A quilt I want to take my time on I enjoy a sewing challenge. I'm going to extend my goal to get these last 4 done by March 1st. I did get the 2 smaller projects done though.

I'll share vacation stuff with you when I return.

One More Top Sewn

And now this one is done. Not the greatest quilt. I started with the 9 patch blocks they were to be a honey bee quilt. But I couldn't get the wings appliqued on and the colors didn't look real great so I stopped with 1/2 the blocks done. Didn't want them to just sit around so I made some alternating blocks. At least the top is done. I think I'll just tie this one.

Dresden Plate

I have the last block appliqued. And the top sewed up. This was a year long project. But yea yea it's done.

16 - 17" blocks that's 68 x 68. I was going to add a border but decided it looked fine with out. I liked this pattern because the spokes had such long pointy ends. But they were harder to finish. I've always loved this classic pattern.

Can't wait to start quilting it. For now I'll put it on hold till I finish some other tops.

Cake Stand

Here is a cake stand quilt the I finished today. The layout that I started with wasn't working. If the blocks weren't exactly perfect the center strips on the blocks really showed that they weren't straight. After sewing a few blocks together I new it would never look good and line up nice. I also didn't like that some of the baskets would be upside down. Here's a picture I took when I started the quilt.
The blocks look nice alone but not when they were put together. I also didn't have enough scraps to make all the blocks out of 2 fabrics. It would have to be more scrappy. So the project just got put on hold. I had the cake stand blocks mostly done but only a few stitched up with the strips. I took them apart.

I made a new layout using my EQ. And sewed them up the cake stand blocks are 5" square. The quilt is 55 x 45''. The binding will be the green that I used for the sashing corner squares. It looks different from the original plan. But the quilt is cute and soft in color. It will make a nice wall quilt or crib quilt.

January Goal

I have the rest of the week off from work. My goal is to work on these projects. There are 8 quilt tops and 2 smaller projects. I want to totally finish the 2 small projects so I can use them. The quilts I would like to just finish the tops. Then put them on hold till I decide if I want to buy a long arm quilter. I started all of them more then a year ago. Some almost 3 years. Most of them have the blocks cut out. I've been working on them over the holidays and hope to get them finished up this month. It would be so nice not to have these hanging over my head. Now off I go to get these done

Pine Tree Blocks

I made a table runner out of these 2 orphaned blocks. My orphan/sample block collection or what ever you call the box of odd blocks is out of hand and needs to be thinned out. I have a little quilting left and then add the binding and it's done. I've been looking for a tree block to make a quilt into. But this block just seams to large for what I have in mind. I guess that's why I make a couple sample blocks before I cut out enough for a whole quilt.

Lucy wouldn't leave the safety pin on the quilt alone she kept pouncing on it. Couldn't get a picture with out her in it.

Cleo Basket Blocks

Sorry I haven’t posted for a while been very busy with holidays. Hope all of you had a wonderful Christmas and enjoyed the holiday season. And I wish you all the best in the New Year.

I've switched to the new blogger so I'm giving it my first try at posting.

I've been sewing on about 7 different projects over the holiday. I laid all the blocks I had cut out on a pile and I've been working my way to the bottom.

Here are some of the basket blocks I've been working on the book I got the pattern from called it Cleo Basket Quilt. Sorry I don't remember the book it was in. It was one I checked out from the library and I can't find it back.

I was stalled with this quilt because I just couldn't get the applique done. My sewing machine doesn,t have a button hole stitch that I can use for applique so I thought I would have to do it all by hand. I love the look of applique quilts. But really don't like appliquing by hand. Out of desperation I thought why not try a small zigzag stitch. Like Dah why didn't I know this would work? The results look wonderful. You can't see the dark thread on the background because it is so close to the handle. It hardly takes any time at all to sew on a handle. I have all the basket parts of the blocks done now. I finished them this weekend they where in the pile of sewing I'm working on. All I have to do now is get the handles on. Here's the ones I have done so far.

Lucy even looked over the handles and thought they looked as good as if I had

done them by hand.
